We joined Direct Buy back when it was United Consumers Club. The membership then was $1,200. I do pay a minmal yearly fee to remain a member. I generally save %50 on everything I buy from them over the prices you get from retail stores. The only exception to that I've found has been some electroncis ([] is competitive). I admit I haven't bought tons of things over the years, but I certainly recouped much more than I spent. I have bought bedding for my children's rooms (half-price off their retail web site); a washer, dryer, two dishwashers, a fridge, a Bulova watch, and other small items. It's not the most convenient to go there and browse their catalogs, and their web site isn't all that comprehensive. (Lots of catalogs at the warehouse that aren't online.) You also have to wait extraordinary amounts of time for your items (3-6 wks!) to be shipped to your home, and some items must be picked up at the warehouse, and you still have to wait that amount of time.

Bottom line: I'm not sorry at all that I joined ... in fact, I'm happy! I haven't been scammed. I've saved money. Maybe now that the membership is 4 times the amount I paid, I guess you'd have to weigh that in your decision.

Yes, the membership is expensive; and yes, you will save money on the items you purchase through them. Guaranteed.

How to start? We do not have the ability to invite folks who do not join at the Open House back at a latter time. For example, many people come to us for custom cabinets because they expect the retail price to be more than $20,000, or even more, and maybe they can save a lot of money at DirectBuy. If they had the opportunity to join the following week, some people may be compelled to use our concept to negotiate with the retailer, before they decide to join DirectBuy, because they did not get the deals they wanted. We represent only 2% of the industry and the retailer is not going to put up with this environment long so it will threaten the manufacturer to stop doing business with DirectBuy. Anyways, why would we make it harder for us to do business? Folks, our business requires this decision policy.

my wife & i just joined about 2 days ago, & i have to say that i do own my own business & have had quite a bit of experience in the retail world. my wife also was a retail manager for a very large national chain. the point being that we are both well versed in retail mark-up. it is considerable! i have done enough homework to know that if you do not take full advantage of your membership, well, you lose. and lose you should if you are dumb enough to get into something with out taking advantage of it! i believe that the person looking for an item or two will lose. but for those of us that are undergoing a major overhaul will win. but, ultimately, only time will tell. my wife and i are about to begin building our dream home, and we fully intend to take advantage of all that direct buy has to offer. i have decided to blog our full experience on this site as we go through the entire process, for those interested, good & bad. so, time will tell....

When we went into the DB in Naperville Ill, my wife insisted that we would do well so against my initial feelings I said OK. In reading the comments of Michael on the 15th I understand the sentiment. Since joining and shopping I have a perspective that I believe is different than when we first attended. My wife is an organized person and was prepared after reading several sights like this one, and bringing pricing with. She has been correct so far because we saved $1460 on a fridge, stove, and washer-dryer combo. The savings on these items represents a 21.6% savings over the best prices we took 3 days to find. We also saved around $650 dollars on a dinette set for the new house we purchased. She was recently exited to learn that she could save another $790 dollars on the Toyota Camry hybrid to replace her used car.(She shops cars via internet) I have started to wish we would have known about this 3 years ago when we re-did our kitchen. I believe if you have reservations about going in and saying yes or no do not waste your time. (We have since heard this conversation take place while shopping) The staff here has always been professional in both they’re explanation and treatment of those who are perspective members. My unique perspective is that my wife Julie was fully prepared, and I had not paid attention to the decision or cost. (Does that make me a typical husband?) She explained to me while we did our paperwork that she found out everything she needed to understand DB including the membership cost online. Her question, which is a good one, is why would people that have very little detailed information from the advertising not at least research this place so as to not pass up on an opportunity to save. Guilty as charged! If I were not with her I probably would feel the same as Mike. I don’t think he and others like him are wrong if that’s how they feel, but they sure seem unprepared. I have also noticed charges like hidden costs, items cheaper other places, and a lot of other accusations that seem like bitterness at best, or a hidden agenda at worst. (Folks do you think retailers might want to spread a little dis-information or what) I paid very close attention at the video presentation and all the costs were covered. My research on the pricing has turned up only small appliances, a ladder, and a digital camera that were of suspect value. We will probably break even on the additional Blinds, Rugs, and an installed tile upgrade for the laundry room we need. Now I have several years to find something to buy(Like a TV) to get ahead. I would tell all of you to find out for yourselves, and remember that nothing in life is free or owed to you. If you can find that world of wonder where they have avoided mark-up and only sell stuff at cheap prices to make you happy please post it on the net because I still shop there too. You should be OK if you need stuff, and prepare yourself to make an informed decision.
PS Julie tells me they may have a landscaping contact to save us on the upgrades we did not want to pay the builder to do, and I am considering a backup generator for the house which if the other members were correct is an excellent deal there.(Sorry I forget these things and I’m sure many more since she spends most of our money)

I am a painting contractor, so does Direct buy save you money on Paint?..sure they do!.. [] MSRP $30.00 a gallon. Direct Buys cost $29.00..Contractors Price $18.00 a gallon. so the short answer is yes, you will "save" with your membership.

Hi I live in southern california, after I purchased my condo I have been looking all over the place for wood flooring, cabnets, and other remodel stuff. I went to all sorts of places but the cheapest place around were i lived was []. So I started looking online and ran across Directbuy. I scheduled one of the tours and in the email they sent back it stated that I wouldnt have another chance to join after this presentation. Which I knew was bull because all I would have to do is go to another store, its not rocket science. Just a high pressure sales pitch. I knew ahead of time after reading the email that it would be a high pressure sales pitch, but I figured hey why not check it out besides maybe I can get a laugh outta the thing. Got there people were nice though the guy who was to show me around was really creepy, way too nice way too friendly. I asked him point blank how much this was going to cost me. After evading the question for a minute he answered with $6000.00 I nearly crapped myself. I asked if it was for life he was like no they cant legaly do that its for 2 years then $200.00 years after that. Well I was ready to hit the door then, but he said to at least check out the prices in the catalogs before I go to see if it was worth it, I figured what the hell. I priced the wood floors I wanted they were $6.89 a sft at [] for the engineered flooring at directbuy the flooring was $3.49 sft for actual hard wood the real deal. The kitchen cabnets were going to run me $2,866.38 at [] and I would have to assemble and install them myself at directbuy I picked them up for around $1,400 and they were pre-assembled. I purchased 4 appliances at DB for $1,200 they were Hotpoint the stove was stainless the others were stainless looking. Needless to say I became a Directbuy member. While I dont like some of the people there, they are only trying to help I just dont like people automaticlly assuming I dont have a clue as to how to do things lol. By the way all the stuff I bought ended up being shipped for free and no hidden fees I dont know anything about some handleing or purchasing fee. I still have some purchases to make so I should be able to make up the rest of the $6,000 easily. If you are remodeling its the best way to go.

People have bad experiences everywhere. My house burned down 2 years ago. Every thing in my house was depreciated by the ins co. I was able to buy everything that I needed and put the rest of the ins. money into savings. I would not have been able to do that without directBuy behind me. Where else can you shop over 900 catalogs at their wholesale price plus shipping and handling? Oh wait......nowhere. If your worried about the decision today then do some homework before you go. Because they do protect the manufacturers wholesale pricing and will always continue to do so. Wow that almost sounds like integrity. Here are a few examples of savings at my house. Cabinets $4700.off(18000. retail),wood swingset $820.00 off(2000. retail) sperry topsider shoes half price. 62 piece Noritake china set $200.00 I bought a bedroom set in 1993 for 7000. today that set is $3500. through DirectBuy. You can also shop the members website at midnight in your jammies. Thats how I found the art that I saved 50% on. Can I save on everything? No, but the benefits far outweigh the few items I don\'t save on. Next week I will be mailing out my daughters graduation annoucements that I saved 50% on. Her class ring was $500.00 at school at DB it was only $213 after shipping and handling. I have noticed that the people who complain are not members and that most of their info is not even correct.

It's unfortunate that there are some shady Direct Buy franchises. I did not read the "visitors pass" and did not expect the high-pressure tactics (if you dont sign up now, never come back is not a good sales tactic) We signed up for a direct buy membership in El Paso, TX under the agreement that if we were not happy for any reason (at our discretion) before the first purchase, we could cancel it. The salesperson agreed. Well, with this agreement, I had no reservations and signed up. The next day we spoke to our contractor and decorator and came to the conclusion that the service would not benefit us in our situation. This is not to say that it is not a good idea for someone else. However, we neglected to realize we had certain connections in the industry that made Direct Buy membership redundant in our case. When I got home from work the next day, I was horrified by the wording on the contract. Basically, it says that they are under no obligation that is not in the contract even if their own representatives agree to it. I was ready to be told "read the contract!" when I went back saying we wanted to cancel and asked for a refund. To my relief, the salesperson,Ginger, was extremely kind and apologized that it did not work for us. She said "I told you if you weren't happy, we'd give you the money back , so that's what we'll do!" and walked us back to their finance department. No attitude and no pressuring to change our minds to keep the membership, unlike some of the horror stories.
They told us the refund would take a week to process and they could not reverse the charge. Since I had them sign a cancellation letter and charged it to my Amex, the worst case scenario was now I would have the charge disputed and I had documentation to back it up. 8 business days later the refund check arrived on time. That the salesperson, Ginger, was very accomodating and helpful even in the refund process speaks volume about the operation here in town vs. some of the horror stories on the net. Ginger was a true class act. From some of the prices we saw, it can be a good idea for someone who is planning on doing a major remodeling and furnishing.
Unfortunately, I can't comment on the service once you are signed up. However, the way I see it is, if they are willing to accomodate me in this manner, the local folks are doing business the right way unlike the franchises which give DB a bad name.

Alot of people complain about shipping and handling, but what many do not realize is that you pay that when you shop at every store. You just do not see it because they roll it into the price. My husband and I bought a sectional that was going to be over $3,000 retail; with shipping, handling and taxes we only paid $1,378 through Direct Buy. We both work and have two kids, so we have to make our money go further. We saw Direct Buy for what it is. It is an intellegent way to buy things, and most people who complain are ususally the ones that couldn't join because they did not have the money when they were presented with the oppurtunity. Unless you go in and have a chance to see it for yourselves, it's not fair to judge a company that is smeared by angry people who couldn't afford it. Open your mind, hear them out, decide for yourself.

Me and my wife are currently rebuilding our home and were interested in joining Directbuy after seeing there commercial on the local news channel. Before going, I did happen to read the complaints blog so I was well aware I may be scammed. I found the total opposite upon arriving. The staff was VERY polite and did not try to get us to sign up for a membership straight away. Before arriving I had priced several items between various stores and had written down the lowest prices. Before signing a membership or even hearing a sales pitch, they allowed us to walk around the showroom and compare prices on items such as TVs, beds, flooring, appliances and plumbing. The sales person even happened to be kind enough to quote us prices on items that were not displayed in the show room. After comparing prices, we found we would save a great deal of money by signing up for a membership. Since we live in a rural community in Ontario,Canada Directbuy said that shipping costs would be high BUT they even went as far to suggest that we rent a [] trailer and pick up the merchandise ourselves, saving even more money. I belive that customers may experience problems with some Directbuy stores operated in the United States (this one was in Canada) because those particular businesses are owned and operated by crooks that don't care about the customer and only care about making a profit. Im also sure there is many Directbuy stores that are operated by honest people that care about saving the customer as much money as they can.

Direct buy is NOTTT a scam. I work in the phone room at Direct buy of New Orleans. Yes there is a membership, but if you are remodeling or refurnishing or even building a home...it will save you sooo much money. I am personally proud to work for a company who saves its members so much money and actually takes care of its members as well as employees. And yes we call you 2-3 times a day...thats just to make sure that you get the info that you requested out to you.I would reccomend DB to anyone who is building or remodeling a home! DO ALL of ur research before you assume that you know how it works!!! Dont let all these people who dont understand break your chances of saving money!!!!!!!!

I am an employee of DirectBuy. When I first started working there it was a little shady because there's not much information given out to consumers. After working there for sometime, I realized why. DirectBuy legally cannot give out certain information because of the contract they have with their manufacturers and suppliers. DirectBuy did not choose to operate this way. Manufacturers and suppliers do not want to upset the retail community. If you could buy things without no retail mark up at all, you would probably never want to shop at a regular store again. We dont want to put retailers out of business, we just want to offer a third way to shop. Also, people complain about the membership. DirectBuy is NOT FOR EVERYONE! If you think about how much you spend in retail markups per year, you've just spent your membership times maybe 4. It really just depends on what you're planning on doing. If you're building a house, it could save you money. But if you're just looking for a couch and thats it, then its not for you. DirectBuy is not a SCAM. People just come in to the Open House or recieve a call and create their own assumptions off of their own experiences. There are rude associates that may call you or are not doing their jobs correctly. But isn't that with millions of companies anyway?! As an insider now I know DirectBuy is not a scam. I too before my career here felt the same way many feel. It's just not for everyone.

Since I found this website a couple weeks ago, I continue to be amazed at the negative comments. The majority of negative comments seem to be from people who've gone to the open houses and were shocked that it was going to cost them money to join. If they'd done their homework first they would have known that! I've spent a lot of time in the showroom looking up information and I've never seen anyone treated poorly. When someone isn't interested in joining or freaks out at the enrollment cost, they've been treated respectfully and told that DB isn't for everyone and that's OK. Of course, this is my local showroom but I haven't seen one person being asked to return their name tag or belittled in any way. The showroom folks have been so helpful to me that I really can't say enough about them!

Direct Buy as it is now known used to be United Consumers Club (UCC).
I joined way back in 1993. Yep. 1993. 15 years ago so for anyone thinking that it is new, and different or the wonder word of the century \"scam\", then one must do some research. The company has been in good standing in business since the 1970\'s. Good grief, in the day and age of the computer, if you have not simply typed \"Direct Buy\" in to a Google search then you did not prepare yourself at all. I was at the new Rochester NY Club the other day shopping for club chairs, entertainment centers, dining table and chairs, kitchen seating and art for the new house. The national average is that people move to new homes on the average of every 7 years. The next thing to do in one\'s new space is to buy some stuff for it or remodel it. It just is the way it is. Therefore, you may be in that statistic right on target, a bit under or a bit over.
Anyways, I joined back when I had a nice smaller house. I had NO intention of remodelling or spending lots of money on my first house. I thought I would be there for quite some time. No wife, no kids. Things changed since then. Now there is a Wife & three kids.
Ok back to the shopping day yesterday. I hear many people talk about \"going to High Point in North Carolina to buy direct from the Manufacturers\" A member that a spoke to did just that. Took a trip to High Point and bought a bunch of nice furniture discounted at High Point prices. She and her husband joined a few months ago and she told me that she looked up all the items she purchased and Viola! She could have saved $4000 on just those items if she had purchased from Direct Buy. Plus the cost of the trip. My brother used to work for a furniture company. He shared the price books with me. When I saw what retailers get things for I was surprised. The mark up can range from 100% to more than 300% For those that wonder why prices can vary: some companies have high volumes with somecompanies. They buy from them in what the call Containers (a 40\' shipping container like you see on ships) . They can buy the product a less money than wholesale and if they are super high volume they can do ever better. This is business. Buy for less, sell for the same as the other retailers, make more than they can. simple economics. Examples of this are large electronics stores who sell large tvs. They buy them by the container so they A: get it for less than wholesale and B: save on shipping per item since they are buying a 40\' container. They will still sell the items to you the final consumer for the suggested retail price. Even if they give you 50% off, they are still marking it up significantly. How else do you think they heat, or aircondition the place, pay the mortgage or rent, their cars, kid\'s educations, vacations, diamond rings, shoes and sharp clothes? Markup. Every business earns the right for a profit. They buy at one price, sell at a higher price. EVERY SINGLE BUSINESS does this. If they don\'t they fail. If you buy from them, you are funding the profit. So, why not pay less? Why not buy from the manufacturer. Why not utilize Direct Buy to as the former name says, become a United Consumer force to purchase at wholesale without having to have a retail store or having to buy hundreds of items from them? The staff at least at our local club are fantastic. They are extremely helpful, they go overboard to make sure you get the products you expect to get. I give a thumbs up as a long time member who has utilized the club for 15 years for purchase after purchase after purchase. The fact is that we are consumers of products. It is only a matter of time when as members we will be connected to more and more local vendors from building supply stores and distributors, to car dealers (we have a page full in our club from hardware supply to building supply, wine stores, to decorating stores and yes a local national new car dealer owner where we can buy true wholesale cost, not invoice price which has hidden profits, plus a mere $400 to cover prep cost). So we can save at every turn. Even so, the prices you will find at Direct buy are generally less and most definitely less than you can get at a retail store. Most sales people at retail stores are commissioned sales people by the way. We purchased our sofa from a company in California. There are no retailers locally that have it, the closest one is down near New York City (6 hours drive each way) We were able to purchase it for close to $1000 less including the tax. Last June, I needed (yes needed) to get my wife jewelry for our 10th. Imagine that, jewelry for a woman on her anniversary. Absurd. But alas, Direct buy has jewelry. I ordered a nice diamond band 1/2 carat tcw. I has seen similar ones at the stores for about $1000 plus the tax of $80 so basically $1100. Did not want to drop $1100. So I quickly checked Direct Buy found the perfect ring, ordered it and received it with in 7 days.$400 including tax and ship. Nice. Your brother needs to be a jeweler to get that pricing. Oh, I forgot, 10 years ago we bought our diamonds (yes loose diamonds) for our custom rings. We get rave compliments on our rings all the time. The cost of membership long since saved already withour trying too hard. Then, it happened, we remodelled our kitchen (8 years after joining. Thank goodness. I shopped, did excel spreadsheets, checked prices, models quality. Then we had the Direct buy personnel layout and price out what we wanted. Cherry and maple, customized cabinets, stainless steel appliances, stainless hood, european sink and german faucet ( we went overboard and I loved the kitchen every single day until we moved 7 years later) We saved $700 on the hood, $$400 on the sink, hundreds on the stove too and the dishwasher all were nice ones. This was possible from Direct Buy. We are not weathy, we had a budget and we were able to get what we wanted with really no compromise because we were able to purchase at wholesale. There are actually close to 900 manufacturers now and it will keep growing. Many many many of the the absolute top names in the business of furniture, appliances, carpet, tile, flooring, plumbing, jewelry, the list goes on and on, are associated with Direct Buy. If it were a scam do you think that companies that sell millions and millions of dollars in products per year are going to affiliate with a scam company. I heard another good one: This is not real, you people print these price lists in the back. Really? They have a $3million printer in the back room of all of the centers, send monthly updates, print in all different formats, in full color, they have a staff of multilingual, high end designers AND they have photos of every single product of every single manufacturer and have them in books that they print for you to see. Oh and the members are plants there to help you join. Believe me, the prices are wholesale. I have the charts of the dishware from _______ department store. The retail price is exact in the book at Direct Buy, the Sale price retail is exactly the same and the wholesale price in the book was way less than half of the sale price. Cool. I could buy the whole set instead of 60% of it and still save money. The names will not show even if I type them and I won\'t jeopordize my membership. Bonafide, to the penny wholesale. The stickers on the books are all the same so you can find them easier. Sorry for rambling. So do your research, click a few buttons but make a rational, educated decision when you get to that point. If you have read this blog, you are researching and probably will not be one of the ones posting on the complaint site since you are prepared and educated so hopefully you will not be reading this and scoffing but reading and learning. Good luck and happy upgrading to what you want and not what you have to settle for due to budget constraints.

It\'s not worth buying this if you aren\'t going to sink 10K into your house. I bought my membership about 4 years ago and am just slightly ahead of the game. You do get great savings on the right type of stuff. I have never had a problem ordering and or receiving a single thing. I order from Tinley Park, Illinois. Perhaps some shops are better then others. I don\'t think it\'s a scam at all. It\'s not worth it if you\'re not going to use it. The salesmen do pressure you, thats for sure. Anyway I have been happy with it. It cost $3K to get in and I have saved about $1K so far, but I have only spent about 10K. I have bought mostly furniture and appliances.

Yes, joining is painful and my wife wishes we had not. That aside, We do get very good below retail pricing on many items we have purchased. Mainly furniture, cabinets, flooring and Appliances. One saving grace for us is the association DB has with local merchants where DB pricing is honored. That gets you lower prices, elimimates remote shipping costs and lets you experience the traditional retail experience. We have investment property in Florida and after Hurricane Charly damaged it in 2004,we joined DB for $4,300 to help pay for the losses. We purchased many items where we live and had them deleiverd to a Florida DB. Without DB pricing it would have at least 30% more. As has been said, do your homework, and rule out BD where they are not competitive.

I find it very interesting that a lot of people think this is a scam. My wife and I just recently purchased a membership in San Antonio and those guys there were awesome. The presentation was only 90 minutes with a little more for paperwork if you decide to buy. The thing I think most people don't understand is that it's going to be a sales pitch. ALL sales pitches are designed just like this one i.e..."you can only purchase today" and other tricks. In this, they are no different than ANYONE else. Remember, you are going to the site to buy a "membership", not a couch or sofa. If you expect to buy the items you need on the spot at significant savings over retail, then you didn't listen. And that is all your fault. You HAVE to do your research and know what the prices of the items are at retail before you buy through DirectBuy so you can choose to save. Some (few) items can be had locally at a retail store or elsewhere for just as cheap, it ALL depends on the retailer and if they want to make any money off their purchase price. DirectBuy ALWAYS gives you a discounted price no matter what day you walk in. So....do your homework, shop around, and you just might find a decently priced retail item....I guarantee you you won't all the time. An example would be Televisions and entertainment products whose shelf life is usually 18 months at best. Most of these items can only be had cheaper through Direct Buy when those items FIRST come on the market....if they have been on the market for a year or more, you most likely will get a better price at a retail store that needs to MOVE the product fast to make room for other stuff. ALSO remember that Direct Buy isn't in charge of what you get charged for items by the manufacturer's that they have. The MANUFACTURERS are.....HELLO....if you want to blame someone for not having YOUR item that you weren't willing to switch out with a better or equal brand named item, then BLAME the manufacturer....THEY set the prices the let Direct Buy charge. How come this is so hard to understand? My wife and I have already seen savings on items we bought that SAM's and Wal-Mart----the cheapest of the cheap....couldn't even get close to when all was said and done. We are already on our way to recouping the cost of the membership. And with some remodeling coming quick for our house, I fully expect to recoup the 5000 dollar membership price before 2008 is over. The caveat is, I'm a SMART shopper. I check prices. I'm not lazy. Most ov the complaints on here have centered around two themes. 1) Hard Sell....get over it. Buyer Beware. You should have known, as we did that they weren't sitting there running a business for FREE....anyone that doesn't realize they are going to a presentation from anyone and not going to be asked to pay, is stupid. Plain and Simple. 2) They didn't see any savings. Maybe not, but I bet if those same posters were put to the question....they would have to admit that there experiences are with one or two specific items that they weren't willing to consider a different brand or even a BETTER brand....Most of your savings with Direct Buy will ALWAYS happen with higher-end items that in the end would cost you the same as regular items at retail....ONLY....get this....YOU ACTUALLY GET GOOD STUFF....what a thought! Bottom line here people is that you were naive. Don't go unless you actually have the money to pay, if it's something you choose to do. Otherwise shut your traps!

You know, my wife and myself have been a member for more than a year. I learned lot, and mostly that the savings are real at Directbuy. I also started to investigate how many companies there are in the "network". I am a member of more than 158 locations. Man, that is awesome. To think, that there is only about 300 some odd complaints on the web, total, and to think that more than half the complainers weren't even actual users or members of Directbuy in the first place. They just complain cause they don't want to make a decision the same day. Did you ever think that is there to protect the million or so members from loosing vendors? That is what they say during the tour. Did you listen to the tour guy? Is that bad to protect the vendors? I believe the membership is only valuable if the only thing they offer is cost books and the ability to buy at cost. Another fact, they have millions of members. Another fact is they were rated #1 in Entreprenuer Magazine in there category. They added more than 15 centers in the last year since I joined. They have been around since 1971. I know my wife and I are happy members in NY. Go figure.
