I have gained a great deal of knowledge through this site and when scrolling through household products listings I read the complaints about Ionic Breeze. I was stunned to see any complaints at all. I bought thier first model(not the quadra)in 2000 through [] auction site and got a great price. It has worked beautifully for me from day one. That unit had a five year warranty even though it was a "refurbished unit". When one of the little plastic pieces on the bottom of the collection grid broke off, I took the grid to my local [] store and they gave me a new collection grid with no hassle whatsoever! Great customer service as far as I am concerned. I use this unit 24/7 in my 800 square foot home and have found it to clean the air in 3 rooms, no problems. Even though the unit continued to work perfectly, about a month from the expiration of the warranty I called customer service to inquire about a new unit. In a five minute phone conversation, the CSR offered to send me a new unit (also refurbished) and to include a pre-paid FedEx return shipping label for the old unit. I received this as promised and have now been using this unit for 3 years. It works absolutely perfectly. I offer these suggestions to the complaintants: #1 don't wait until the unit hisses to clean it. The collection grid can become very caked if left uncleaned and it takes longer to get the junk off. #2 With the unit unplugged, after you clean the grid, replace it into the main case and you MUST turn it upside down and hold it there for 30 seconds. This is stated in the product guide that accompanied the unit. If you don't do this the unit will hiss even though you cleaned the grid thoroughly. #3 I use canned air to clean dust off the wires inside the unit and this method has worked well for me taking little time. I also use a qtip dipped in alcohol for this but I like the idea of a poster who suggested a tampon on the end of a stick and think this would work extremely well so I am going to try it next time. Lastly, I will state that I am a smoker and this product completely removes the smell of smoke and the odor associated with smoking in my home. Also, there is no smoking tar build-up on my walls or curtains like I experienced before I had this wonderful product. Hey, I guess I sound like a cheerleader here, but I firmly attest to the excellence of this product and I wouldn't want to live without it. Now I'm afraid since the company filed for bankruptcy a couple weeks ago that they won't be available in the future so I am going to buy another just in case. Thank you!

Only thing that I have to say about it is I'm shocked about this as well as the workers of [] I'd take it.I've owned the Ionic Breeze Professional Series Quadra for since 2005 and I have never had any problems with it. It does what it said it will do. I'm not giving this one up to those who claimd it's not worth it. They tried so hard to defend it but lost. I can't imagine why [] got away with this. Well more than 100 years ago a guy name Upton Sinclair said "It's difficult to get a man to understand something when his salery depends upon his not understanding it". And I've lerned from him.

I've had 4 of the Ionic Breeze GP units for over 3 years now. They continue to work as advertized. I have some answers for the complaints I am reading here. Complaints of black gunk being generated by the units - If you burn candles in the home or have any kind of fuel fired heating system in your home other than electric, this is probably where your black gunk is coming from. These units seem to pull EVERYTHING out of the air. Complaints of buzzing and hissing noise - you are not cleaning the units as directed, or frequently enough. Clean the collector plates with a damp cloth, and you MUST turn the unit over several times before replacing the collection plate assembly back into the unit. This cleans dust, hair, etc. off of the wires in the unit. Also, a can of compressed air used to clean computers is good to blow out the bottom of the unit now and then. Complaints of dust on the walls by the units - the units do circulate air even though very slowly. In a dusty environment, the clean air coming out of the unit will still mix with dusty air from the room and if the unit is faced to a wall or on an angle to a wall, the dusty air is gently pushed onto the wall and the dust sticks to the wall. Also, dusty air is entering the unit and if the unit is backed against or too close to a wall, the dusty air passes over the wall and the dust will collect on the wall. Keep these units away from walls a couple of feet and don't face them to a wall. It is true they will not collect animal hair as animal hair is "heavy" and usually falls to the floor or furniture before it can reach a unit like these. A vacuum cleaner is good for animal hair, not an air cleaner of this type. A unit with a filter and fan will obviously pick up animal hair as it is adding much more turbulence to the air and this keeps the animal hair in suspension much more than this unit would. These are my opinions and come from my background as an HVAC technician for over 26 years, dealing with air movement and filtration on an almost daily basis. I hope this helps with those who have stopped using a good unit for the wrong reasons.

I own two large ionic breezes and three small ones. I clean them once each week with the scotch cloth that came with them using rubbing alchol. I turn each unit over several times before I reinstall the collectors. Mine works great. House smells good and dusting is less frequent.

I have had my Ionic Breeze for 5 years and got the black model refirbed from the [] site. Anyway, Never had any problems with it and replaced the GP bulb once in 5 years. It's awsome and works very well at cleaning the air. Funny thing is I had turned it off for a few months and forgot about it. My alergies kicked up and I had to go to the doctor for meds. I cleaned the blades and thought maybe it wont hurt to turn it on again. No lie, within just a few hours the room air smelled clean and I got a great nite sleep without itching and scratching. The bottom liine is im sure there are other great products out there but for me the Ionic Breeze GP works very well and turning it back on after a few months of being off proves to me that it works very quickly. I wonder if the competetors post nasty things about it because where else can the negitive remarks be coming from? Hope this helps. From a real customer. David [] in Philadelphia PA.

I purchased an Ionic Breeze (referb) [] for my mother and loved it! I bought two more for my own home, one for our master bedroom and one for the main living room. After a couple of weeks, you'll see all the hideous things it captures on the blades. Very easy to clean and with the UV light, it kills the germs as they pass through! I know it's helped us.

I have had two Ionic Breeze air cleaners from Sharper Image for three years. I find they work very well. They collect a great amount of dust in a very short period of time. They must be cleaned every four to six days, to ensure maximum efficiency. The cleaning process is easy. Just wipe blades with a slightly damp cloth, and replace blades when dry. I also turn the cleaner upside down several times when cleaning it, to loosen dirt, and improve functioning of unit. I think this was a very worth while purchase from a very customer friendly store.

I bought the ionic breeze several months ago. Both my son and I have sever allergies and asthma. I bought it at a department store which was less expesive than the advertised model. At first i did not think it was working but i did notice the difference of the air compared to when it was shut off. We have pets and this product works terrific. It really does clean up the air and it does not take long to clean. My family is very happy with this product. Infact my neighbors bought one and they love it as well.

I have owned an Ionic Breeze for 6 years. I bought it refurbished back then for $200. Like everybody else does, I noticed an arcing or crackling noise after a few weeks. The engineer I am, I determined that the problem was caused by a white film building up on the filaments that was impeding the electrical field they generate, except in small areas where there are breaks in the film and it arcs. A good fix for this is to use a compressed air bottle to clean the filaments, but what worked best for me in this (no giggling please): 1 Unplug the unit and remove the blades. 2. Construct a cleaning wand by taping a tampon (or equivalent) to the end of a coat hanger wire and spray some windex or rubbing alcohol on it. 3. Gently wipe the dust off the filaments using the wand. There is usually a groove in the tampon that is good to seat the filament in. If you can't reach the top of the filament, bend the wire a little. Be very gentle not to break the filament. I have used this technique for a couple of years without damaging them. I honestly think that most of the complaints about noise can be solved using this technique. It is a little tricky, so you won't hear about it from Sharper Image. However, my mother in law has 1 year old model and has had no problems with noise whatsoever. P.S. Another way to access the filaments is to disassemble the unit via the small screws located where the two clamshells meet. This is much more time consuming though.

I had to post after reading the complaints section. I am a satisfied owner of one of these units for the last 3 years. I have also experienced many of these problems, but I have also found easy solutions. The crackling sound seems to be peoples\' main beef about this product. I found that after six months or so, even after a thorough cleaning, the unit buzzed, and truthfully, I was on the verge of \"fixing\" it with a sledgehammer and bonfire. I tried turning the unit upside down on every axis to let the beads do the work, but that did not cut it. Then, brainwave! Electronics stores sell cans of compressed air for blowing the dust off of sensitive components. Give the bottom of the device a few blasts, and your problem is solved until dust, under the influence of gravity, naturally accumulates there again. As for the dust on the walls, that is another effect I noticed, but that simply proves that the unit is processing significant volumes of air. Grab a rag and some Mr. Clean... And some in the complaints section even questioned the fact it worked at all! I have experimented with periods of one month on, one month off, several trials, in a very dusty and smoky environment. Here are my individual results: -The Ionic Breeze works best when used with a fan in front of it, it processes air much more efficiently. -It significantly reduces the smell of smoke and other odours throughout the house; my wife hates cigarettes, and complained frequently during periods when the unit was turned off... although she didn\'t know I had turned it off!!! -It reduces dust buildup by roughly 50%; dusting was at least twice as frequent without it. -In spite of this, I am still worried because of the prevalent smell of ozone that emits from the unit; ozone bad... Judge for yourself, but please don\'t get bitter and call me an idiot because you had bad luck. Try my suggestions listed here, or try at least being respectful to the poor suckers working customer service, and you might work something out, good luck.

My wife and I ordered this product with a bit of skepticism. However, we can see and smell its effect in our bedroom. The dust it collects is stuff that we do not breathe in anymore. We've had it for 3 years and love it. It will last a long time if you take care of it properly.

I love my Ionic Breezes...I got 2 of them two years ago...they do clean the air, and do not crackle unless the filters are overdue for a cleaning ...It is so easy to clean the filters...and then the crackling goes away...They are very well built and they take up very little space in my small apartment!

Have been running two GP units for over four years now and they are doing exactly what they're supposed to do. As with most things, you need to follow the directions that were included with the units. In particular, as to the issue of the "buzzing" noise, you simply need to clean the grates as usual and prior to reinserting them into the unit, turn the unit upside down for about 5 to 15 seconds. Once returned to the upright position and turned back on the noise will be gone. The small insert that was included with my shipment detailed this procedure and its worked like a charm. As to having to clean the grates with a Q-tip, I've never done more than rinse them off under the spray of the faucet and/or wiped them with a damp sponge. If your grates are so filthy as to require a nearly surgical precision to clean, perhaps you should consider cleaning them more frequently. My husband suffers from household allergies and he wouldn't be without these in our home. They work well and do exactly what they're intended to do and yes, so long as you follow directions, they do so silently as advertised.

I have owned three ionic breezes for several years. They have never caused me any problems. I am a reader of consumer reports and subscribe to the magazine. I feel they did not adequately test the ionic breeze. When you first use and ionic breeze, much of the dust and dirt in the air precipitates out on to the floor, the walls, and the furniture. The air becomes clean, and quite dust free. A stream of sunlight through a window will confirm this. After you sweep and dust the room, the ionic breeze should take care of the rest. I have to clean mine once a week. I'm sure consumer reports did not consider the dirt and dust that was left on the floor and walls as dust removed from the air. They considered, in my opinion, only the dust collected on the collectors. A house full of smokers was left odor free by the next evening. I am a very happy user of the ionic breeze.

I live on the fringe area of a small town in Indiana. My home is located about 1/8 mile from a working farm. Lots of dust. I've owned and continuously used two Ionic Breeze GP units for more than 5 years. As long as they are properly maintained (cleaned when needed), they work. Period. My wife has breathing difficulties. The IBGP's have noticeably reduced dust and odors in the house. We turn off our IBGP's when the windows are opened. They aren't quite good enough to clean the entire outside world. I believe that many of the problems people have with this product are related to unrealistic expectations or deficiencies with maintenance. Outside of regular cleaning, our maintenance has been limited to recent replacement of the UV antibacterial lights. If the units that we own ever fail, we'll be purchasing replacements in kind.

We have had our IB Quadra for 2 years now. It has never been noisy. While I agree the IB does not remove any dust, it does help with odors. I think it works like the return vents with our H/A system.

Read complaints about this product.I am amazed at all the complaints about this product! I have been using mine for over a year and am VERY pleased with it! Everyone says my house smells exceptionally clean and I have 2 big dogs. Yes, it does make a crackling sound, BUT only when it needs cleaning. It is so easy to clean too. I have learned 2 important things: do not run when you have candles lit or when you are using a wood burning fireplace. It attracts pollutants (exactly what it is supposed to do!) so it will need a cleaning more often. I will never give up my ionic breeze! If it ever breaks, I will order 2 more!

I've been using the Ionic Breeze for several months. I have one in my bedroom and one in my den. Both run 24 hours a day. The machines are absolutely silent, so you don't notice them at all. They work absolutely "as advertized" on TV. I keep my home extremely clean, and I am a non-smoker, but the amount of build up on the metal grids, in one weeks time, is just incredible. Every time I clean the metal collectors, which is quick and easy with a damp cloth, I realize that the dust and black sooty build up on them would otherwise have collected in my lungs. I haven't had one single cold since I bought the Ionic Breeze, not one. I breathe easier now, I sleep much better at night, and the air in my home is noticeably fresher. I was amazed that the air DOES flow through the unit without any fan, but it really does. I am very satisfied with the Ionic Breeze - to say the least. I highly recommend this product. It works, as advertised.
