Oxy clean is simply sodium percarbonate - when dissolved in water, it forms a solution of sodium carbonate (also known as washing soda) and hydrogen peroxide. The bleaching effect comes, of course, from the hydrogen peroxide. In order for the product to work properly, you must make sure it is completely dissolved before adding any laundry. If this is done, the product will work just fine. I believe that there are some people who put their clothes into the machine, start the cycle, then add the oxy clean to the wash, right on top of the clothing, as the water fills the machine. This is improper technique. Additionally, if the product is left exposed to the atmosphere (with the lid off), it will eventually lose its potency as a result of the sodium percarbonate reacting with the moisture in the air. It will eventually end up as a tub of washing soda and will no longer produce the active ingredient of hydrogen peroxide, so keep the lid on tight at all times to retain the product's potency.

After seeing this product advertised for years on TV, I noticed it at a local warehouse store (rhymes with [])and picked it up. I'm not sure if it's the same product ordered on TV...it has the title versitile listed with it's Oxy Clean name. Anyway, it has performed beautifully for me. I had heard it might lighten dark colors, so I don't used it with darks, but I add a scoop with my bedding or whites, and often with my 19 year old son's clothing, which needs extra cleaning, as he tends to wear things more than once (college kids!) plus he works in a restaurant and gets greasy. For everything I've used it for I've been exceptionally pleased, and I don't please easy. My whites are whiter, and it even removed the orange iron stains in my many years' old washing machine. I even tried it on a dark, set in stain on my light colored carpet, and it got almost all of the stain out, about a 75% improvement over other products I had tried on the stain.
I would highly recommend this product. It's a welcome addition to my cleaning product lineup. The only tip I can think of is that I always make sure I follow the directions and make sure it's dissolved in warm water in the washer tub before adding clothes, even if I then switch the water over to cold.

I read a few of the complaints and I am very surprised. I did notice something common with the people complaining about it doing nothing, they all bought the product at a dollar store. Maybe that has something to do with it. I have been using Oxy Clean (correct spelling) for years. It is an amazing cleaning product. Now, what I think some people do not realize is that if you wash and dry clothes then later try to get a stain out, it probably will not work. Using this on stains when you wash them after getting the stain it works perfectly. It can also get blood out of materials. Who has not ruined something by getting a cut and then got it on your clothes or furniture? This product is amazing. I do not use it in my everyday washes, but if I have been doing hard work and sweating a lot or doing something where I get really dirty I use it in the load with those clothes and it is awesome. Also, try the new liquid version of Oxy Clean, it works really well. Oh, buy from Target not a dollar store to make sure you are actually getting Oxy Clean and not some cheap knock-off.

In the laundry, I use Oxy in the white load instead of bleach. It does just as good and is better for the environment. I also use a scoop when washing the kids' sports uniforms, sheets and towels.
Try this: Run 1 scoop through an empty dishwasher. It cleans it so well it looks like new again. I do this monthly.

I really love Oxyclean. I am a college student and my mom (a laundry expert) has been using it for years and showed me how well it worked. It has gotten out the majority of the stains I've used it on. So far I have only used it on pre-treating stains, in the washing machine, and to get out carpet stains (worked great in all areas) but would like to try the other uses as well.
I only have 2 complaints about this product: 1. Don't use this on clothing that has silk screening/decals/fabric paint on it!! I used Oxyclean to stain treat (I soaked the garment in a bucket with warm water and a little oxy clean) a pink tank top I bought that has little silver polka dots that are either silk screened or decaled/painted on the fabric, anyway it took off all the dots. So really it does work good maybe too good but like I said, be careful not use it on anything with decoration because it will take the paint/decal/silk screening right off!
2. I used the new blue Oxyclean strain pre-treater on my magenta coach cover and it turned the blue stain to a very light almost white pink (looks like a bleach stain), perhaps a bad interaction or cheap dye but the stain pre-treater has worked great on my clothes that have stains!

The complaints about this product surprise me. We have used Oxiclean for years and had good results.
Anyone who has boys who like toys knows that absolutely NOTHING is 100% when it comes to stain removal.
We have hunting, fishing, skiing, paintball, rugby, etc etc etc at my house. Besides that my guys work on cars, boats, snowmobiles, electrical stuff, and sometimes their clothes are just nasty before washing. If it wasn't for oxiclean I would need to throw out many socks after just one wearing!
Stains need to be pre-treated as others have mentioned. You need to get at it as soon as you can. We also use well water so add oxiclean to pretty much every load.
We also have a front loading washing machine which we've had for 15+ years now. That is another secret to cleaning clothes (which apparently the whole world has stumbled on now).
If oxiclean is so aweful why are there so many competing products now?
BTW, the best thing ever for blood stains (as told to me by one of the techs at our blood bank). Contact lens saline solution. Its make-up is similar in pH and salinity to plasma. It works wonderfully on old, dried blood.

I have to defend this product as it works great for me. I use it the way Barbara of comment 12/17/07 writes: I fill a bucket with the hottest water from my tap, but I add just one scoop of Oxi powder. Then I soak the garment (overnight works the best). Also, like Barbara, I have sometimes put that same soaking solution into the washer with the garment and other unstained garments, and the whole load comes out great. In my experience, the product works best when you dissolve the powder into a highly concentrated water solution. Soak stained garments completely. Through trial and error I found that if you only treat the stained area you might be left with a water mark where the stain used to be and this is no good, but soaking the entire item even if it is a material that is dry-clean only, like 100% silk, this method has worked perfectly. This method has also worked with items I was ready to turn into a rag because it was a set-in, old stain. Great product, in my opinion!

I didn't notice much change in my laundry when I tried it there, but I LOVE IT for stains in the carpet. After letting my son walk through the living room with _grape juice_ in a cup (yeah, I know better), I used the oxyclean to clean up the spills my son left in our cheapo beige carpet. I must have had 20 to 30 spots of red and few big puddles. After I was done, you couldn't even tell anything was spilled, let alone red grape juice. For that, OxyClean has my loyalty!

I originally purchased Oxiclean about 8-10 years ago in powder form. Where we lived (NJ) it made a huge difference in my whites--where we are now (FL) it makes no difference at all. Either the product has been changed in that time or the difference in the water which caused dinginess in NJ is what is creating the lack of noticeable benefit now. However, used in a paste form on blood stains this is still my first choice, but it must be applied directly and rubbed into the clothes. I have never used it on carpet. I am going to try it on my jewelry as one person suggested.

I just wanted to point out that there are far more compliments than complaints for this product. It doesn't seem to deserve its status as a 'blacklisted' product. It certainly isn't a 'scam' in any sense of the word. It's a fairly inexpensive product easily available at thousands of stores, including grocery stores, [] et al, [], etc. If someone doesn't like it, most of these stores will give you a refund on the product if you ask for one.

I use this first of all to soak my coffee pot and filter basket each week, as well as clean any stains off the maker itself. It works great. I also have an older cat with IBS, and she throws up when she has an attack. I just wipe it up, then spray with oxyclean and warm water, leave for about 10 minutes, and blot with towels. I have light ecru carpeting, and there's never a trace left. I also use it as a paste rubbed into laundry stains, and they almost always come out the first time, the second for sure. I can't live without this in my cupboards!! I use it for a lot of other things as well, but this will do for now.

I am suprised that people have been on here complaining as recently as some I've seen here. Oxi-Clean is a great product that I have been using for years. It helps with laundry, and carpet etc. I personally have a lot of baseball caps that get a little sweaty and dirty, and soaking them in some Oxi-Clean and water helps them look almost brand new!

I am a culinary student, so I get some pretty gnarly stains on my chef whites. Oxiclean is BY FAR the best thing I\'ve found to remove the stains from my white jackets. I leave them to soak in the washer with a few scoops (plus detergent if they\'re really grungy)for as long as possible, preferably overnight. I love the stuff...

I use this product all the time. It's not a miracle like they show on TV, but it works really well on some things. Did a great job cleaning old soda stains in the carpet in my truck. Pretty good for cigarette smoke stains. Not good at all for cleaning the grill, or other grease type things. I add a capfull to all my non-bleach laundry loads. Don't know if it does anything, but I've been doing that for 2 years.

We decided to try this product shortly after our first child was born. Our water is from a well and is very hard and we tried everything to get the formula stains out of our daughters bibs and clothes. We saw a comercial for Oxyclean and decided to give it a try. My husband does the laundry and he made a paste with the Oxyclean and placed it on the stains before washing and it worked great. It saved a lot of clothes both for our daughter and her younger brother!

Like so many people, I purchased oxyClean for laundry use -- two boys and loads of stinky, stained clothing! I didn't really notice that it improved the laundry when added to a load. However, for truly stubborn stains, I sprinkle OxyClean & either water or pre-wash spray onto it, and work it into a paste. This never fails to remove horrible stains! Even if I find a stain after the dryer has set them into the cloth, I can still put on that paste and get it out! But the best use I have found is for cleaning the carpet using an extractor -- rented from the local hardware store. I passed this method to several friends, who also use it and love it. Steaming hot water and OxyClean in the extractor's tank will remove the nastiest dirt my kids and hound dog leave behind. All stains gone, and it smells super-clean without being overwhemlingly chemical-ish or perfume-y like the cleaning solutions made for the machine.

I think Oxiclean works well for my purposes. I use it for my work-out clothes that had a tendancy to smell like a bad locker room after a few uses. Non-chlorine bleach didn't remove odors. I tried Oxiclean and found that the odors were removed. It is nice being able to work out in clothes that don't smell like work out clothes.

I purchased Oxi Clean at [] for the first time 2 weeks ago. I love the results. My lampshades looked horrible with nicotine stains and I was really going to buy new ones but decided to try oxi clean. I filled the kitchen sink up with water and oxi clean and dipped first one end of the shade. You could immediatly sede how it was melting the stains off. Now my lampshades look like new. All nice and white. It also took the yellow out of white tshirts that had been hanging in the closet a long time. It whitens whites in the laundry. I only paid $3.50 for it and feel it was well worth the price to save the lampshades which are not cheap to replace!
