my mother bought several of these hooks and gave me 3, I attached one to the door on my electrical box and it has been there for almost 4 years now. I did mess around to see how much it will hold and found out that my 16 pound bowling ball is too much for it, yet it held my daughter's bowling ball for over 4 days till I actually needed to use the hook again. I say any smooth surface, that is clean (and you can't use orange cleaners or Pledge, because they both leave residues) the product works fine. Finding a completely smooth surface in your home that has no pits, lines or other indentations in it maybe your real problem.
